Message from Mayor John McEwen

Late in the day yesterday (June 23, 2025), the Village received notification from icona Properties Ltd., that they have withdrawn their application related to Official Community Plan Bylaw Amendment No. 686-2023.

Needless to say, this came as a surprise, and we are still confirming details of icona’s intentions.

The Village made the decision not to proceed with the Public Hearing that was scheduled that night.

I would like to let our community know that from the start, Council wanted to explore the potential opportunities from this application. We did not know what the final outcome would be, and we felt the Public Hearing would provide another opportunity to hear from our community.

That said, there has been extensive work done over the past two years to review and consider the application, and while it has been withdrawn, I want to recognize and thank the many staff and contractors who have worked diligently to prepare reports, review technical studies and engage our community.

I also want to thank the many people who took the time to participate in our community engagement by staying informed and sharing their input.

And my thanks also go to my fellow Council members. We set out in good faith to consider this application as required by legislation, and we pushed for additional requirements such as a Neighbourhood Plan and community engagement that went well beyond regulatory requirements.

I do not know what will be considered next for Anmore South, as it is up to the applicant.

Again, my thanks to the many people who have been working long hours on this process.
