Roads & Snow Clearing

Our Public Works team is responsible for the infrastructure side of Village services. Our primary road maintenance services include fixing potholes and other making other road repairs, managing contractors for road projects and snow removal.

To help prevent flooding during heavy rain, the five-person Public Works team clears ditches and catch basins as part of regular maintenance so that water can drain effectively.

When temperatures drop below freezing, our team applies salt to the roads, which often requires overnight shifts by our crews to ensure a safe morning commute.

Snow Clearing Priorities

The Village has established priority routes when clearing roads during snowfall. This is to ensure that essential emergency response and transit routes are cleared first, followed by roads that have more traffic flow or are on steeper terrain. Road crews also pro-actively spread salt when temperatures are forecasted to drop to 2 degrees or below.

Priority Sequence:

  • Priority 1: East Road and Sunnyside Road are cleared first during a snowfall, and then continuously if the snow keeps falling.
  • Priority 2: Once the Priority 1 routes are cleared, the side roads are cleared for travel.
  • Priority 3: Once Priority 1 and 2 routes are cleared, the cleanup of cul-de-sacs, etc. is done.

Note to Residents: When snow is in the forecast and during a snow event, vehicles should be parked on driveways/properties instead of on the street wherever possible.

Winter Preparedness Tips for Residents

As winter approaches, it’s essential to ensure our homes and communities are ready to face the challenges that come with colder weather. Taking proactive measures can help prevent common winter issues such as flooding, road hazards, and safety risks.

Here are some key tips for residents to keep in mind:

  • Clear Catch Basins and Ditches: Regularly check and clear any debris from catch basins and ditches near your property to prevent flooding.

  • Maintain Gutters and Downspouts: Ensure these are free of leaves and debris to allow proper drainage.

  • Avoid Street Parking After Snowfall: This helps with snow removal and reduces the risk of accidents.

  • Contact Public Works for Emergencies: Report any overflowing ditches, fallen trees that pose safety risks, or road safety issues like sinkholes or missing stop signs promptly.

By following these guidelines, residents can contribute to a safer and more prepared community during the winter months.
