Honouring Dr.Hal Weinberg

January 26 2024

We have lowered the flag at the Anmore Community Hub today to honour our former Mayor, Dr. Hal Weinberg, who passed away this week. The Weinberg family kindly sent us the following message to share with our community:

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Dr. Hal Weinberg on January 25th. Hal passed away at home after a short illness, surrounded by family and love.

Hal became interested in local politics after moving to Anmore in the 1970’s and eventually became the Area Director for the then unincorporated Village.

He went on to become the first mayor of Anmore; with the help of Linda and good friends Bob and Bobbi Hunter they envisioned and incorporated Anmore as a municipality and independent Village. Hal’s vision was to preserve Anmore as a small rural place where people could continue living relatively freely. He loved Anmore and everything it represented, always hoping for it to be a small, unique and diverse community.

Outside of his role in Anmore, Hal was a renowned neurophysiologist and researcher at Simon Fraser University where he worked from 1966 until 2012.

Hal loved his family, science, animals and nature. He believed in peace and diversity. We will gather in the near future to celebrate Hal’s life.”
